If you have to deal with Social Security on Veterans Day, you have a few options – but they do not include field office visits.

The Social Security offices are closed on Veterans Day, one of 11 federal holidays recognized by the agency. Telephone services that require live representatives may also not be available. Check the SSA.gov website to see if phone service is available in your area on Veterans Day.

Your best option is to visit the Social Security Administration”mineSocial Security” portal, which allows you to apply for and manage all your Social Security benefits online. if GOBankingRates reported last week, you can sign up for the account for free and access personalized tools that you can use even if you are not currently receiving any benefits. The account allows you to apply for a replacement Social Security benefit card, check the status of an existing application, estimate how many future benefits you will receive, or manage the benefits you are already receiving.

The closure of field offices should not disrupt the lives of too many Americans, however, as offices are closed to all but special appointments during the COVID-19 pandemic. As GOBankingRates previously reported, the Social Security offices are traditionally open on weekdays from 9am to 4pm. But that changed in March 2020, during the early days of the pandemic.

In a statement sent to FL1 News in September, the SSA said: “Every week we are increasing the number of employees in our field offices to make more internal appointments. We have more than 1,200 field offices staffed with personnel who perform face-to-face appointments and other services.”

In-person appointments usually involve “limited and critical” benefits that cannot be resolved by phone, email, or online. Visits may also be available to those who need to correct or update personal information associated with their Social Security Number, such as their name or citizenship.

The SSA has a COVID-19 update page for those who want to know if they are eligible for a personal visit to a Social Security office. Otherwise, on weekdays, you can call the SSA’s national toll-free number at 800-772-1213 between 8:00 AM and 5:30 PM.
