About 25 inmates COVID-19 positive in SW Washington prison

About two dozen people held in a southwest Washington prison have tested positive for COVID-19.

Clark County Jail Chief Phil Sample estimated Monday morning that between 20 and 25 inmates tested positive from a facility population of about 340. That means about 7% of the detained population tested positive, The Columbian reported.

Sample said staff has isolated the pods with people who have tested positive and that medical staff check them often, if not daily.

The number of cases was the highest Monday since Sample took over as head of the prison in July, he said.

The prison saw an outbreak in late fall 2020, with 44 inmates testing positive for COVID-19 in early December.

According to Sample, people in custody are screened for COVID-19 before being booked and wear masks. He said they have followed the protocol of Clark County Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

No staff member has tested positive, Sample said.
