Fort Myers Pharmacist Notices Increasing Demand for COVID-19 Injection
FORT MYERS, Fla.–With the COVID-19 booster injection now available to any adult, pharmacies said they have seen an increase in people sitting down to receive the injection.
Sam Patel, a pharmacist at Carrell Pharmacy in Fort Myers, said he has noticed increased demand since the FDA approved the booster shots days ago.
“A lot of people call and walk in for the booster dose,” Patel said. “They get the right information and it changes their way of thinking about getting the vaccination.”
Patel also said he believes the holiday season could contribute to demand.
“Particularly the people who are traveling or have travel plans in the coming weeks are more likely to get the booster dose,” Patel said.
Lee Health said their Gulf Coast Medical Center vaccination clinic has seen an increase in demand for boosters in the past month.
So is their mobile vaccination clinic, which has delivered a total of 208 boosters, 162 of them since Nov. 13.
“It’s important, it’s something we can do to boost our immunity and stop this pandemic,” said Dr. Stephanie Stovall, an infectious disease specialist at Lee Health.
“Every time we enter a holiday season, we want to do everything we can to protect people and prevent them from spreading disease while enjoying friends and family.”
Chain pharmacies like Walgreens said they’ve also seen an increase in appointments.
“To me, this is the most powerful tool we have and it’s the one we should embrace above all others,” Stovall said. “It’s been a tough time, so to see people doing the things we know will help end this is encouraging, it’s uplifting.”
