Your Social Security checks are getting bigger on this date
By 2022, Social Security recipients will see their monthly checks grow by 5.9%, the largest cost-of-living adjustment in decades, as we reported before.
But when exactly do you get the first of those thicker checks?
It turns out it depends on your date of birth – specifically the number of the day you were born. For example, if your birthday was June 3, 1955, the most important number to remember is “3.”
While the COLA kicks off in January for the entire program, your own first check reflecting the 2022 COLA arrives on the according to schedule:
- If your birthday falls on days 1 to 10: You will receive your payments on the second Wednesday of each month, meaning you will receive your first payment with the 2022 COLA on January 12.
- If your birthday falls on days 11 to 20: You will receive your payments on the third Wednesday, meaning you will receive your first 2022 payment on January 19.
- If your birthday is on days 21 to 31: You will receive your payments on the fourth Wednesday, which means you will receive your first 2022 payment on January 26.
However, there are a few exceptions to this rule. If you received Social Security benefits before May 1997, or if you receive both Social Security benefits and SSI benefits, you will receive your Social Security benefits on the third of each month.
SSI Benefits are income allowances for the elderly, blind or people with disabilities and little to no income.
When should you appeal to social security?
Deciding when to enroll in Social Security can be tricky. For many people, it pays to wait as long as possible, up to age 70, as your monthly benefit increases each year you wait. But others may benefit from getting benefits earlier, even as early as age 62, which is the earliest most people can claim them.
