Valley Nurse, Husband Dies of COVID-19 on Christmas Eve

Valley nurse Alan Bennett is one of 25,000 Arizonans who have lost their lives to COVID-19 since the pandemic began.

“My daughter and I, and his daughter, held his hand when he died… and I just told him I loved him and it was okay to go,” Angela Claudio explains with tears in her eyes .

The pain of losing her husband is still so fresh, so raw.

Bennett died on Christmas Eve from complications from COVID-19.

“He was a great guy,” Angela explains. “He always took care of everyone. Even if you weren’t a relative, he’d help you if he could.’

That’s what Angela says made her husband such a standout nurse; not one, but two jobs, fighting on the front lines of the pandemic before contracting the virus himself in early December.

“By Saturday he was dizzy and passed out on me.”

Desperate for help, Alan was rushed to the emergency room where he was placed on a breathing machine — the virus would eventually strike his heart, causing him to develop atrial fibrillation. There were signs of hope at first, but they would be short-lived.

“A week later it stopped working and they had to intubate him and when they intubated him it didn’t work. They couldn’t keep him going and about a week later he died.”

Unfortunately, Angela is no stranger to loss.

In 2004, her first husband died of a rare condition that caused his aortic valve to rupture. Years later, both her sons would suffer the same fate.

Angela is suffering tremendous loss in her life and says she is still looking for ways to help others – just like Alan did, even though nothing can bring him back.

“I miss his hugs, his kisses, his smile.”

If you want to help Angela and her family, a GoFundMe account has been set up for them.
