Austin health leaders host COVID-19 Q&A after business orders announced

AUSTIN (KXAN)—The Day After Austin-Travis County Announced New Business Orders for COVID-19, local health leaders are organizing a media Q&A.

The Q&A will take place on Friday, January 14 at 10:00 AM. We expect to hear from Dr. Desmar Walkes, the local health authority, Adrienne Sturrup, the interim director of Austin Public Health, and other APH experts.

Austin-Travis County is in Phase 5 Risk-Based Guidance currently the most restrictive level. Those guidelines recommend that anyone who is in public wear a mask, regardless of vaccination status.

Since Thursday, 127 people have been in area ICUs with COVID-19, 63 people are on a ventilator. More than 6,000 people in Austin-Travis County tested positive for the virus in the past 7 days, according to Austin’s COVID-19 Staging Dashboard.

Austin’s community transmission rate (CTR), the number of people testing positive per 100,000 people, is 1,233, which is high. That percentage is just a hair lower than the CTR for the state of Texas.

The briefing will be streamed live in this story and on KXAN’s Facebook page. This is a story in development.
