BBB warns of resurgence of COVID-19 test scam

(Gray News) – The Better business agency warns of scammers targeting people in need of COVID-19 testing.

The recent spike in COVID-19 cases has led to fake websites and fake testing sites being used to collect personal information.

In one version of this scam, the BBB tells you to appear on the test site. But before you can pass an exam, you will be asked for personal information and a photo of your driver’s license and insurance card.

Then a smear is taken with the promise of results in a short time, but the test is fake in the end and the results never arrive.

According to the BBB, another version of this scam involves providing the same personal information while scheduling a COVID-19 test appointment online.

However, when you show up for your appointment, the pharmacy will not have a record of your appointment.

The BBB reminds consumers that free COVID-19 testing is available to everyone in the US at health centers and select pharmacies. Someone asking for payment for a test means it is probably a scam.

Also, make sure to only get tested at authorized testing sites or health centers. You can check your local health department’s website to find authorized sites in your area.

Furthermore, the BBB warns consumers to be wary of cold calls and messages. Do not provide any personal information before confirming that it comes from a legitimate source.

If you’ve seen a scam, report it BBB scam tracker, even if you have not been victimized or lost money. Your report can help others avoid common scam tactics.
