Conroe ISD Raises the Threat of COVID-19 to Level 4

Conroe ISD has increased its COVID-19 response and mitigation efforts to Level 4, the second highest and stricter alert of all five levels.

The move comes after the district superintendent said schools have seen an increase in infections, making staffing a major problem.

“The move to level 4 is to help us deal with this very rapid spike that we are seeing. We don’t see as many cases of students as we did at the beginning of the school year, but what we’re seeing most now are cases of staff,” said Chief Inspector Dr. Curtis Null.

Among other things, COVID-19 kept 1,100 employees off work on sick days, Null said, putting them short of 300 replacement teachers, and threatening a move to close schools.

However, Null said mainstream teachers and staff have stepped up to fill the gap.

To help, the district is increasing its mitigation efforts to a level 4 response, which includes limiting large gatherings, postponing activities, improving cleaning protocols, limiting outside guests and more personal protective equipment.

Students here say people should be careful.

“If you’re not feeling well, you should stay home,” Zayden Timple said. “There are people here who get sick and die. We try to keep that to a minimum.”
