Free COVID-19 Tests (East Somerville)

THE WEATHER IN SOMERVILLE

Remember to dress warmly!

Mayor Katjana Ballantyne today announced new COVID-19 testing sites in East Somerville to expand access to free testing for Somerville residents and employees.

First, the city, in partnership with local health company LCG Boston, is opening a walk-through testing site at the Igreja Internacional da Graça de Deus (International Church of the Grace of God) at 85 Washington Street in East Somerville. This site will be able to administer and process 500 PCR tests each day the site is open, greatly expanding the city’s current testing capacity of 200 tests per week. The site is opening Saturday January 15, and offer three days of testing weekly for about four weeks if demand warrants.

Second, a pop-up test site for Somerville residents will be held on Saturday 15 January, at Connexion, 149 Broadway, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Appointments are mandatory. (Updating: All appointments for this location are fully booked.) This site is for residents who have symptoms of COVID-19 or have known exposure to COVID-19. Residents can schedule a test online at somervillema.gov/covidtesting or by calling 311 (617-666-3311).

One hour at the beginning of each day Seniors+ Access will be reserved for seniors aged 65 and over, persons with disabilities and vulnerable persons who face barriers to entry.

“My number one priority as mayor is to fight this wave of COVID-19, and to do this effectively we need to expand testing in a strategic, meaningful way,” said Mayor Katjana Ballantyne. “That means adding capacity, removing barriers and focusing resources on those most affected by the virus in our response. I am grateful to our partners at LCG Boston and the Igreja Internacional da Graça de Deus for supporting this vital resource for our community.”

On Saturday, January 15, the opening hours for the general public are from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Senior+ Hour runs from 10am to 11am. For future opening hours, see below and also see the weekly schedules at somervillema.gov/covidtesting or call 311 (617-666-3311).

Testing at this location is open to Somerville residents and employees of all ages who are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, or who have confirmed close contact with someone with COVID-19. Testing is free regardless of health insurance or immigration status. Appointments are not necessary. There is limited street parking on Washington Street, and MBTA bus lines 86, 91, and CT2 stop nearby. The church is located at 85 Washington Street and the testing area is outside in the parking lot behind the building.

Individuals seeking tests for travel should check: mass.gov/GetTested for other options. Individuals who have previously tested positive for COVID-19 are not allowed to perform a PCR test for 90 days and therefore are not allowed to use this site. PCR tests can show positive results for several months after symptoms have resolved. Rapid antigen self-tests are more appropriate to check for return to work or normal activities.

“There is a huge demand for testing right now, and we are fortunate that we have been able to secure these assets and that so many in our community are willing to conduct testing to control the spread of COVID-19. But that also means that we have to ask for everyone’s patience. Conducting walk-in tests helps to ensure the widest and most equitable access, but there can be lines. Please come prepared with something to keep you busy, warm clothes and your patience in tow,” said Justin Kates, director of emergency management in Somerville.
