Indonesia reports more than 1,000 cases of COVID-19 daily, highest in 3 months

JAKARTA, Jan. 15 (Reuters) – Indonesia reported 1,054 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, its highest daily increase in three months, as the government braces for a new wave of coronavirus infections fueled by the spread of the Omicron variant.

The world’s fourth most populous country struggled with a devastating second wave of infections in July, driven by the spread of the Delta variant.

The daily number of cases fell to about 200 in December, before rising this month on reports of local transmission of the Omicron variant.

“Local transmission has been found and Jakarta has become an infection cluster,” Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin said in a statement on Saturday. “We need to coordinate with the regional government to sharpen mobility and strengthen health protocols, boost vaccinations and strengthen health facilities.”

He did not elaborate on what restrictions the local authorities might impose. Officials usually review the pandemic-related measures every Monday.

Indonesia discovered his first COVID-19 case of the more contagious Omicron variant on December 16. The number of confirmed cases has since reached more than 500 and officials have said the infection rate could peak in February.

The Southeast Asian nation kicked off its vaccine booster program for the general public this week.
