Oregon Department of Justice conducts joint investigation into two COVID-19 testing companies

The Oregon Department of Justice has launched an investigation into two COVID-19 testing companies operating in Oregon.

One is called Center for Covid Control, which: WW reported Tuesday is under investigation by the DOJ. But the Justice Department confirmed today that another company was also involved in that investigation, Community Wellness America.

The website says it offers PCR and rapid testing, and it is based in Encinitas, California.

The company says it “helps community members achieve and maintain optimal health and well-being by providing resources to act as a handle to pull themselves up by addressing aspects of their physical, mental and emotional well-being. This includes physical fitness, nutrition & weight loss, disease prevention & longevity, smoking cessation and stress reduction.”

The DOJ did not immediately say how many sites the company operates or operates in Oregon or the locations. Information about the Oregon locations was not easily accessible online, but California officials in several cities are investigating the company after it ran a handful of pop-up sites about the state.

The DOJ first received complaints about sites operated by Center for Covid Control in October, but only launched an investigation this week. The Justice Department has still not said the date on which the investigation started.

“Often we don’t open a formal file until we have collected more information or get a complaint pattern. The additional information leading to the opening of a formal file (ie information about practices in other states) was received only this week,” said spokeswoman Kristina Edmunson. “This is our second study of a test site and both the Center for Covid Control and the other site have been on our radar since October. For the Center for Covid Control, we logged the information we had — which was not enough at the time to open a separate investigation — to the other related case.”

WW reported Tuesday that the Oregon Health Authority had not received test results from the company, or its stated lab partner, Doctors Clinical Laboratory. The company has been registered in Oregon since October and operated three locations—two of which were in parking lot sheds—until the company… announced on January 13 that it would be closing for a week due to staff shortages and high demand for testing.

The company has been under scrutiny in nearly 10 states, where allegations of inappropriate testing practices at sites, failure to report test results to local health authorities and questions about test accuracy have spread.
