Researcher explains how hemp compounds can prevent COVID-19

TUCSON, Arizona (KOLD News 13) – Promising Results from new research shows that there may be another way to prevent infections with COVID-19.

Oregon State Researchers Identified hemp compounds that can target and prevent the virus from infecting humans. They said a cannabinoid acid could prevent COVID-19 from entering human cells by targeting the virus’s spike protein.

“This particular type of cannabinoid will actually bind to that spike protein quite strongly and when it does, it prevents it from passing through the receptor and the cell,” said Dr. Todd Vanderah of the University of Arizona.

The spike protein is the same target used in vaccines and antibody treatments. Once approved, the hemp compounds may be another option for someone who doesn’t want to get the vaccine.

“Would this be something that, if you had it on board and you were exposed to the virus, could reduce the amount of viral load? Yes,’ said Vanderah. “I think it would be interesting and a little bit more like the vaccine to some extent, except it’s not a vaccine. It’s something that would just be on board in your body.”

That would be the downside. The hemp compound should be in your body at all times to prevent the infection because you never know when you could get infected.

“Once infected with it, it’s a little different,” he said. “Once the virus gets into the body, it’s a bit of a different process.”

Vanderah said it’s hard to imagine the hemp compound could completely replace the vaccine, but it could add another level of protection.

“We know we will live with COVID for a long time, so why not get something other than the vaccine,” he said.

The study is still in the early stages of research, so it could be a few more years before hemp compounds are approved for use against COVID-19.

Unless the process is accelerated, as has happened with the vaccines.
