Essex County’s health department reported two COVID-19-related deaths on Friday.
ECHD said the two people who died were 55 and 60 years old. Neither had been vaccinated and both were hospitalized with serious illness before dying.
A total of 58 Essex County residents have died from COVID-19 during the pandemic, five so far in 2022.
On Thursday, ECHD reported 85 new cases of COVID-19.
A coronavirus outbreak at the Federal Corrections Institute in Ray Brook increased Friday, with Federal Bureau of Prisons statistics showing 104 inmates and five staff members testing positive for COVID-19. On Wednesday, 69 inmates and four staff members tested positive for COVID-19.
The facility currently has 853 inmates, according to the website, so 12% of the population was active with COVID-19 on Friday.
FCI Ray Brook is currently in the “Level 3” level, the most intense level for COVID-19 security restrictions. Visits to the facility have been suspended. Everyone is required to wear a mask at all times and maintain social distancing. Employees do daily symptom exams and temperature checks when they go to work.
There are coronavirus outbreaks at three state prisons in Malone — Franklin County Public Health reported 21 cases at Franklin Correctional on Thursday, seven at Bare Hill Correctional and six at Upstate Correctional.
Franklin County reported 156 new cases Friday, 87 confirmed by PCR testing and 69 by home tests. There were 853 active COVID-19 cases in the province on Friday.
Statewide, 49,027 new positive cases were reported on Friday, according to the office of Chief Executive Kathy Hochul. As of Friday, 12,207 people with COVID-19 were hospitalized statewide; 100 of those people have been hospitalized in the North Country region.
