He joined the Spanish expedition to the Spice Islands led by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, the world's first circumnavigation, and is best known for being the chronicler of the voyage.

I Pigafetta erano fiorentini, che, nell'anno 1000, arrivarono a Vicenza con il nome di Della Rosa, ed erano guelfi. Infatti nella casa in via Pigafetta ci sono rose e iscrizioni.
