Northernmost point of Europe
7 minutes read. Nordkapp, Norway 71° 10′ 21" N. North Cape or Nordkapp is known to be the Northernmost Point in Europe. It's located on the Island of Magerøya, in the Troms og Finnmark county. Every year about 200.000 tourists go there to enjoy the beauty of Norway and to go on an adventure with a group of friends or with family.

A more challenging hike will take you to cape Knivskjellodden, technically the northernmost point in Europe, from where you can see the seaside cliff face of the North Cape Plateau. You can go fishing for giant king crabs on a RIB boat (and feast on fresh, tasty crab afterwards!). In winter, explore the white, treeless landscape on a snowmobile.

The northernmost point of mainland Europe is located at Cape Nordkinn ( Kinnarodden) which lies about 5.7 km (3.5 mi) further south and about 70 km (43 mi) to the east. That point is located near the village of Mehamn on the Nordkinn Peninsula.

Nordkapp is the (more or less) northernmost point in mainland Europe and is situated in the northern extreme of Norway. Forty-five minutes later, it arrives at Europe's dramatic northern climax. Nordkapp, or North Cape, is not technically the northernmost point - a lonely peninsula a few miles west holds that honour.

Surprisingly - wrong! Cliffs of North Cape are located at 71°10′21″N 25°47′04″E making it the most northerly point reachable by car, however the true most northerly point of Europe is nearby Knivskjelodden peninsula. It reaches 1.5 km further north than Nordkapp, at 71°11′08°N 25.71°E.

The northern point of Rossøya, at 80°49′44.41″ N, is the northernmost point in Svalbard, and therefore also Norway. It is just over 1,000km from the North Pole.

There are three places that claim to be Europe's northernmost point: Kinnarodden, Knivskjelodden, and the North Cape, all three in Norway. So, I took a map and Knivskjelodden seemed to be the real northernmost point (71° 11′ 08″ NB). Knivskjelodden can, unlike the North Cape, not be reached by car (nor by bike).
