CES 2007 Goldmund's $300k Turntable John Atkinson | Jan 13, 2007 I couldn't resist posting this photo, not of a product, but of photos of a product, just to get Mikey Fremer all riled up about the fact that the Continuum Caliburn turntable, for which he forked out mucho dinero, is no longer the Big Dog of LP playback.

After Goldmund's media room that featured 128 speakers, now it is Reference II turntable that enjoys the reputation of being the world's most-expensive turntable. All set to turn the ambience making you crazy to its beat, this $300,000 turntable flaunts a 20kg salver machined to a hundredth of a millimeter, a vibrating motor guarded by 15kg.

Goldmund Reference II. The Reference II was limited to just 25 units, has a platter that weighs 20kg, and some 15kg of brass shielding for the motor. There's no end to the fantastical-sounding features - 'liquid nitrogen-rectified belt' being our favourite - but sadly the £165,000 doesn't go quite as far as you might hope; you'll.

US-based luxury audio company Goldmund will manufacture only five a year for five years, and the quota for 2007 has already been filled. This is one exclusive piece of audio kit, then, and lovely to behold as well: Swiss-made, the metal work is from the same company that supplies parts for Patek Philippe and Rolex watches, so the finish is superb.

#1 Thorens Reference & Goldmund Reference Turntables The decade between 1975 & 1985 was very special, almost all the turntables belonging to the Beyond category were designed and produced during this time. This is when Linn ruled the mobs and magazines hailed it as THE REFERENCE while Thorens & Goldmund created uncompromised masterpieces.

The Goldmund Reference, on the other hand, is widely regarded as the world's most amazing vinyl spinner. Take a peek at it. Is it possible that this deck might have come from any decade other than the 1980s? It's a real 'uber deck,' decked out in ostentatious high tech and personifying the decade's ethos of 'if you've got it, flaunt it.'

I certainly couldn't lift the whole thing. The base table is a 600x530x45mm slab of ally with a steel frame bolted to it to give the classic Goldmund "mechanical grounding", (if you believe that works, I don't) that calculates to weigh about 37kg, the platter is about 20kg iirc the subchassis is pretty heavy too, I'd guess the whole thing between 75 and 125 kg probably, or 150 to 250 lbs.

After seeing the $11,000 turntable, a number of Gadget Lab readers emailed in to tell us about one that's far more expensive: Goldmund's "The Reference II," a similarly bizarre-looking device.

Plenty of turntables have passed through our test rooms over the decades, from brilliant budget record players that deliver excellent performance-per-pound value, to high-end turntables that have us eagerly revisiting every record in our collection. But there's still a world of super -high-end turntables out there that we don't tend to see.
