(Sitka) - The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is announcing a revision of the 2022 sport fishing regulations for king salmon in Southeast Alaska and Yakutat. These regulations will be effective from 12:01 a.m. Friday July 1, 2022, through 11:59 p.m. Friday, March 31, 2023. The regulations are:

July 31, 2023 The weather doldrums settled on us for the second half of July with almost no wind, a flat calm ocean, and mild temperatures. The fishing has been anything but calm with big schools of silvers showing up, ample numbers of kings mixed in, a scattering of chums, and way too many pinks.

Sitka Fishing Report: 2022 by Jon Martin Our season began a little early in 2022 as I hung up my rifle to focus more on chasing fish rather than spring bears. As usual, the month of May stood out both in terms of great weather and opportunity. King salmon showed up in force with sizes averaging 12 to 14 pounds, fairly typical for this month.

A very strong August and early September fishing for salmon, halibut, lingcod, and black cod in Sitka, Alaska. King salmon remained strong until about the last week of August, with historic limits. Silver (Coho) salmon started to grow 1-2 pounds per week. Halibut stayed hungry throughout August. The black cod were plentiful if the wind cooperated and the group wanted to leave the salmon grounds.

Chum salmon have had an incredible run this summer. These bright ocean chums are hard fighting and very good eating fish. The kings, while not at peak numbers, continue to enter the catch daily and the average size is the best of the season with plenty in the 20's and a few in the 30's.
